According to Stephen H. Hochschuler, MD., sciatica pertains to the symptoms of pain in the leg usually characterized by pain in the leg or weakness that usually begins from the lower back all the way to the buttock and down to the sciatic nerve in the back of the leg. Spreading of pain from the back to leg, which is normally characterized by tingling, numbness or weakness are the distinguishing factor of this back pain. This is usually caused by inflammation or compression of the nerve roots in the lower part of the spine, otherwise known as sciatic nerve. Herniated disc is said to be the most common cause of sciatica. This can occur either suddenly, which can cause acute pain or the other type, which develops gradually. Other causes of sciatica are Spinal Stenosis, Osteoarthritis of the spine, Piriformis Syndrome, Isthmic Spondylolisthesis, Spondylolisthesis or even something as simple as muscle strain.

While the most common advice when faced with this kind of pain or any other pain for that matter is to immediately consult a physician, a sciatica relief is not that difficult to achieve. Sciatica relief can be achieved by resorting to home remedies or by taking medications. Some of the medications that can lead to sciatica relief are non-prescription NSAIDS such as ibuprofen and aspirin. These can treat help alleviate the pain and the inflammation. Analgesics may also help in treating the pain but not the inflammation. The injection, on the other hand, of corticosteroids can stop the inflammation. When one experiences an acute pain, the physician may prescribe codeine preparations. This may or may not be accompanied by muscle relaxants.
One can also experience sciatica relief by trying certain home remedies. There are some vegetables that are said to provide sciatic relief. The juice of potatoes and celery leaves are said to be effect in providing sciatica relief. The addition of carrots and beetroots to this mixture are said to strengthen the same. Celery tea, Elderberry juice and/or elderberry tea and garlic are said to be good for sciatica relief as well. One must also have an increase intake of the foods that are good sources of B1 or Thiamine and B-complex. Pork, bananas, beans, whole-grain cereals, liver and peas are some of the most common sources of the said vitamins.
The same should be coupled with exercise in order to rejuvenate the body and relax the muscles. For severe or acute sciatic nerve pain, sciatic relief can be achieved after a bed rest but only for a couple of days. Resorting to bed rest may not necessarily hasten recovery because of the fact that inactivity may cause the muscle to weaken quickly. There are some easy to follow exercises that can give sciatica relief such as hamstring stretching and aerobic exercises.
These are some of the things that can give sciatica relief. In choosing, one must always take into consideration the advice of his or her physician before embarking in any program. It is always wise to get a consultation and to see to it that your current program is tailor-fit to your needs.
